My journeys will take you to new places foreign and domestic...
Hi! I’m Christian, the husband of the primary author of this blog, currently traveling with her around the world for three months before I have to go back home for work. This is an update from my halfway point on my perspective on the journey.
When we were planning this trip, I did not really know what to expect. I have never traveled continuously for so long, and several of the places we are going to are unlikely places I have seen in the past. I did not know how I would like spending twelve days in Mongolian gers, or what it would be like to not work for so long, or being away from the comforts of home for months, or even what it would be like to be with my wife 24/7 for months.
We’re getting to the end of the second continent and I can say that this has been a great experience. I lost track of how many countries we’ve been to so far, but I really enjoyed seeing everything we did. I’m even happy that I did the things I enjoyed less, because they were an enriching experience – especially seeing how Mongolian nomads live. I think this trip has made me more comfortable with a more adventurous style of traveling and with the idea of going to more unusual destinations. I even enjoyed being around Jasmine 24/7, although from time to time we both feel the need for a bit of alone time. I haven’t thought about work at all.
But a few days past the halfway point, I am starting to miss home.
I am now feeling a bit annoyed at having to pack up everything every few days and going to a different place, where we will also only stay a few days (or maybe just one night). There’s no stability, not much time to really start feeling at home in a place.
I didn’t feel like this at all earlier in this trip even though the circumstances were really no different. I guess it’s just the amount of time that has passed. Or maybe this is still an effect from spending several weeks in unexpectedly cold and rainy weather, which always wears on me to some extent. Maybe sunny Spain will help me feel better again!
I am still excited for everything that’s ahead of us, and am especially looking forward to seeing West Africa. We got our visas yesterday!
