Travel plans
The first thing to do is wrap your head around why you want to embark on such a journey and what are some of the pros and cons to such a journey. For us, we decided to begin that by drafting a list of things to consider, some of our anxieties, some of expectations, and some of the things we are looking forward to. Here’s our list below. We did this for the purpose of continuing an ongoing conversation about travel and our expectations and what it means to us.
What would your list look like?
Key things to consider:
- Hubby can automatically get a 3 month sabbatical, but will ask for 6 months. If he gets approved we do the whole time together. If not, then it’s 3 months. How do we feel about that?
- We will spend one month in each continent we go to.
- Our goal is to travel in 2018. The start date will either be June of 2018 or January of 2019. We like warmer travel so we’ll need to arrange travel around that goal.
- Some of the travels will be together and some of the travels will be separate (different styles and time constraints).
- We will have to set the list of countries to minimize travel time but maximize what we will see.
- So far we have seen very little of South America, Asia, and Africa.
- My mother has agreed to keep the dogs for us while we are gone
- I will need to quit my job so is it 2018, or 2019?
What This Travel Means to Us:
- We can use this opportunity to practice our Spanish.
- We can use this opportunity to learn new skills and hone old ones.
- There will be lots of exciting adventures.
- And new experiences.
- This is an opportunity to cross a line off of a bucket list.
- Overcoming my personal anxiety.
- Personal growth
- This is an opportunity to discover something new about myself and the world. But mostly myself.
- Documenting my travels through photography.
- Opportunity to take a risk unlike any other.
Concerns and fears:
- I am afraid that I will never want to come back to America and work again
- The thought of being in so many places in 3 to 6 months and not having a home to return to within that period causes me anxiety.
- I am afraid that I will feel that I have not seen enough.
- I am afraid that this experience like most things will just pass me by and I will constantly be striving for more meaning.
- Safety
- Visiting unsafe cities.
- Getting sick in a place that has really s*** healthcare.
- When it is my time, being alone.
- Missing our puppies.
- How to plan for three to six months of travel for people with two very different styles.
- How being together 24/7 will feel in our relationship.
- Realizing I am not enjoying any of it and how that will affect my partner.
Excited and looking forward to:
- Seeing many things in many countries.
- Just doing it.
- Horseback riding in Mongolia.
- See a stunning landscapes and beautiful cities.
- Not being afraid anymore.
- Getting lost in discovering something really really cool while making it back safe.
- Spending a lot of time together with my wife.
- I am so excited to swim in clear blue waters.
- To make this travel website and inspire others to take a crazy journey like ours.
- Planning travel.
- Buying travel clothes – I probably shouldn’t do that-
